Overtime Anyone? No Thanks, I’m busy.
I received this email from a Union brother on June 15, 2008:
“Yesterday afternoon, after controller X has been off the schedule for weeks, a supe asked me to change my shift on Monday because there's no 6 shift and the eve shift is heavy. I passed and suggested that they call OT since there are only 4 on the day shift and both over- laps are 12s; not a way to work traffic in mid-June.
Later, TR said he called MT (the only one in the facility who could work OT that day) and said that MT passed. I don't know if it's because he's busy, out of town, or knows he'll be ill through 2pm Monday, but what the &^%? They call him about 36 hours in advance, MT says no thanks, and gets away with it? Let's let everyone know about it so when the wife, husband, kids, or whoever answers the phone on an RDO the controller can say, "no thanks" and hang up.”
Now that’s runnin’ it like a bidness.
A11 Mega-bids = “Blood Money”
If you talk to any prospective bidders for the A11 MEGA-bids, and you want to give them the Union line, here it is:
Anyone bidding on these blood money bids is considered by NATCA to be a self-serving, shallow, materialistic low-life, and will be treated as such. We don't want them, NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE.
Of course, don't put it to them this way, unless you have to. Ask them to please not bid. I have deterred five potential bidders already who were aware of the controversy yet wanted the Union's blessing. Well, they aren't getting it from me. True Union brothers and sisters under- stand the situation once you explain that these bids are taken out of the pockets of the new hires. Don't encourage anyone, we really don't need help that bad. We need a fair, negotiated pay scale. They’re like Chilkoot Charlie’s, they cheat the other guy and pass the savings on to you! The hard part for the Agency is going to be explaining why they took two more CPC’s out of the A11 controller unit for the imminently closing supe and TMC bids. How can you declare that we are so desperate for controllers that we need these super bribes, and then pull two CPC’s out of the unit? Answer that one.
Followers or Leaders?
It is generally accepted that rank-and-file members of a religious faith are called “followers”. They listen to the message of their leaders, who interpret the faith from the organization’s historical record. The followers adhere to the rules professed by the leaders. I recently saw some pictures from an FAA Leadership Thingy, where a boatload of henchmen, mercenaries, and foot soldiers from the front lines were assembled in one room to hear the word. The Leaders on the stage spewed the ideology, which must be adhered to by the henchmen under pain of discipline... <<MORE>>
